Bill Gregory | Director & Founder

Bill has over 20 years of experience in manufacturing, prototyping, product development, and commercialization as well as in entrepreneurial endeavors. He was the IT and CAD/Computer Aided Engineering Manger for 11 years at the University of Kentucky Center for Robotics and Manufacturing, working as the industrial extension agent and helping Kentucky manufacturers and Entrepreneurs with product development. In his work with the Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments (Vis Center), he was the Co-PI on two DOD grants totaling over $6.2 million. He developed multiple large format and rapidly deployable display systems as well immersive environments, touch surfaces and walls. He prototyped small hardware such as the Mark VIIE laser range finder and designed and constructed a world record 50 mega-pixel projected display. Additionally, he started the Tactile Imaging Group on campus, creating 3D prototypes for medical modeling. He built multiple 3D scanners and handles all the 3D printing for the Vis Center. As Chief Engineer in the development of a mobile truck mounted LIDAR system, he created Terrain models from LIDAR data. He was a contract employee for Lockheed Martin and has current Secret Security Clearance. He started two technology related businesses, SCRIBE LLC and enomalies LLC. SCRIBE creates technological solutions for theatrical productions from large scale rapidly deployable digital backdrops to remote controlled motion platforms. As owner of enomalies, Bill created museum exhibits, developed IOS and android applications and built 3D scanners.

Michael Schmidt | Director of Technology Development

Michael worked with Bill Gregory for 5 years on a variety of government grants and troop-training projects. He served as Rapid Prototyping Manager at the Center for Visualization at the University of Kentucky before taking a position with Lexmark International as an Embedded Systems Firmware Engineer. He earned Bachelor degrees in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering in 2009 and holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering with a thesis on Simulation and Control of a Quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Michael has experience writing microcontroller firmware and Linux device drivers and enjoys exploring new development areas and opportunities. He has worked as an independent consultant on several museum exhibit projects and research endeavors, and writes and maintains enterprise software for a local dog daycare business.

Cindy Crider, J.D. | Business Manager

Cynthia Crider is a transactional attorney in multi-aspect general practice. She has experience in complex document drafting including EB-5 international immigration project documents, business entity formation, creation and review of financial statements, and high volume document managemet for tobacco litigation defense. She is a member of both Kentucky and Florida Bar Associations and received her Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1998. She has extensive independent consulting experience in Intellectual Property and Business Development, including Trademarks, Patents and Copyrights.

Sydney is a Junior at the University of Kentucky pursuing a Marketing degree and possibly a minor in Art Design. In the past she has worked in the food industry, in retail, and currently has an internship at a Marketing Firm in Lexington.

Larry Hassebrook | Advisor

Laurence G. Hassebrook is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, a Professional Engineer and an active member of the Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments at University of Kentucky. While studying at the Center of Excellence in Optical Processing, he received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1990, his M.S.E.E. from Syracuse University in 1987 and his B.S.E.E. from University of Nebraska in Lincoln, in 1979. He worked at IBM Endicott, New York between 1981 through 1987. His research interests are in 3-Dimensional Data Acquisition, pattern recognition and N-Dimensional signal processing. Current work includes 3-D surface scanning of objects in motion, dynamic pattern projection for multi-target tracking, automatic target recognition, and scene reconstruction from partial images. Dr. Hassebrook has published more than 144 technical papers.


Tony Elam | Advisor

Mr. Anthony J. Elam (Tony) is Director of Strategic Initiatives for the College of Engineering at the University of Kentucky and Principal Consultant for Elam Consulting. Mr. Elam has both industrial and academic experience. His industrial experience was with IBM focused on complex systems and management of large science projects (for example: DOE Superconducting Super Collider, NASA Earth Observing System, DOD Joint Training Analysis Simulation System). His academic experience is in research management with Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine focused in research development, industrial relations and strategic partnerships. He is the founder of the Houston Serious Games Research Consortium (over 250 members from academia and industry) and a strong advocate for the use of gaming technologies for education, training and business applications. He is also acting Director of Business Development for a new biomedical device startup Cognita Labs.


Col Rob Blissard, USAF (RET) | Advisor

Colonel Blissard is an experienced program manager for concept and product development and alternative energy initiatives. He is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and served as Operations Group Commander, where he was responsible for all training, flying operations and sustainment requirements to provide combat ready aircrews. He is an Air National Guard Liaison to four Air Force Acquisition Organizations and serves as the Sitting Chief for AFROC. His specialities include Program Management and Communication, Budget and Budget Management and Logistics (Aircraft Maintenance). He currently works in Product Development for Borsight's Aviation Speciality Group Company, including efforts in software, electronic flight bags, surveillance suites and next-generation JATO hybrid technology. He previously served as USAF/NGB Deputy Director, where he acted as a proponent for National Guard joint force development, operational planning, joint doctrine, education and professional development, training exercises, readiness, and assessment.


Captain Roger Coldiron, USN (RET) | Advisor

Thirty years as a Naval Officer in positions of leadership at every level through squadron command. Successfully lead between 25 and 350 people in various jobs at times in combat (Liberia, 2002 for example) and often in tense circumstances where implications of judgmental errors could have global implications. Experienced in persuading representatives of various agencies with varying goals to work together toward a common solutions. This was especially important in getting the various agencies in the Embassy in Denmark to work closely among themselves as well as with Danish intelligence and law enforcement networks to share information. Responsible for implementing programs for sharing of intelligence and other information to conclude that all agencies can win. Built commands and organizations with superior reputations for cooperation with those around them. Served as a successful counselor and mentor to junior officers and young ensigns to ensure their succeess. Spent a total of 6 years teaching in classroom environments during my career in settings from straight lectures to seminar formats. Served as commanding officer of the USS Stump (DD-978) from 1998 to 2000. As commanding officer, responsible and accountable for everything that happens inside the ship including welfare of the 320 member crew, morale, combat performance, maintenance, navigation, preservation, and safety of flight operations for two SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters. Complete responsibility for every aspect of the ship. Achieved Knight Commander, Order of the Dannebrog by order of Her Majesty, Queen Margrete II.


Brad Johnson | Advisor

Bradford Johnson is an engineer and MBA with CDM Smith. He has 15 years experience and has managed more than 30 transportation projects for local and state government. He is program manager for four Kentucky Transportation Cabinet on-call contracts. He is responsible for coordinating all business development activities for the Lexington transportation group and is currently the office leader for the 16-member Lexington office. He also recently provided consulting services to start-up boutique clothier Peacocks and Pearls.

Gordon Garret | Advisor

Gordon has over twenty five years of experience in technical and business leadership roles. He has excelled at both business starts and business turn-around endeavors. Gordon formed, grew and sold five high-tech related businesses serving the health care sector. Gordon has served as interim CEO for multiple start-up and existing business clients. Additionally, Gordon has served as a management consultant to notable clients such as Phillip-Morris Corporation, MCI, Seaton Medical Center, Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Florence (South Carolina) Medical Center, Kentucky Housing Corporation, Clark Materials Handling Corporation and the State of West Virginia, Economic Development Office & Office of Health and Human Services. Gordon has immersed himself in the study of information technology and its implications for management. Gordon has degrees in Computer Science, Management and Organizational Theory. Gordon is a certified technology commercialization consultant and certified turn-around professional. Since joining the University of Kentucky Commercialization and Economic Development in 2006, Gordon has consulted with hundreds of companies, performed over 120 turnarounds and is responsible for over $150M in capital injections.


Melody Carswell | Advisor

Melody Carswell received her A.M. (1984) and Ph.D. (1988) in engineering psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the University of Kentucky Psychology Department, she was an Assistant Professor of Human Factors Engineering in the Psychology Department at the University of Louisville. She has published extensively on the topics of human attention and perception in relationship to visual display design, and has also worked as a usability consultant on projects ranging from the design of surgical displays to the design of consumer products. Dr. Carswell has served on the editorial boards of Human Factors, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, and Ergonomics in Design. She was the Editor-in-Chief of Ergonomics in Design for six years, and she is currently the Publications Chair for the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. At the University of Kentucky, Dr. Carswell is currently the Coordinator of the Cognition, Learning, and Performance research cluster in the Department of Psychology, is Associate Director of the Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments, and is Director of the Graduate Certificate on Human-Technology Interaction.



Randall Lewis | Avionics Engineer

Randall holds a Bachelors Degree in Physics from Eastern Kentucky University (2012), and a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky (2013 and 2014, respectively). He served as a project engineer at the University of Kentucy Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments for two years, where he performed research on simulation and visualization systems for military applications. His grant deliverables were to the US Army Night Vision Lab and Lockheed Martin. Randall has extensive experience in fabrication and prototyping and holds great expertise in the creation of first pass proof of concepts.


Ruigang Yang | Associate Professor of Computer Science

Yang's main research area is in computer vision and computer graphics, in particular 3D modeling and 3D visualization. Since Yang's tenure at the University of Kentucky at 2003, he has received over a number of grants and contracts to support his research, averaging $470K per year. He received the prestigious NSF Career award for his work on 3D modeling and visualization. He is a co-PI of the "Urbanscape" project funded by DARPA in 2004, and the PI for a 1.4M NSF project to develop mobile range scanning system. He is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transaction on Pattern Recognition and Machine Intelligence, a top journal in the field of Computer Vision. Yang earned his PhD in Computer Science in 2003 from the University of North Carolina at Chapen Hill.

Yongwook Song | Engineer Associate III

Song currently works for the UK Center for Visualization and Virtual Environments, where he develops and maintains software for long and short range iris and facial recognition systems, immersive display systems, and camera-based automatic calibration for large scale curved screens. He has served as both a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant in multiple capacities both at the Universtiy of Kentucky, University of Connecticut, and Pukyong National University of South Korea. Song holds a Masters degree in Computer Science with a thesis on a 16-projector light field display with selective depth compression technique.
